What Does a Freelance SEO Specialist Do for a Small Business?

A freelance SEO specialist helps a business understand how customers search, improve relevant website pages and review what happens after people arrive. For a small business, the useful question is: what work will be completed, and how will we judge it?

I’m Shaheerali, a freelance SEO specialist based in Malappuram, supporting small business websites across Kerala. This guide explains the work you can discuss before agreeing to an audit, implementation project or monthly support.

Start with your business and the pages that matter

Before recommending changes, I need to understand your services, the locations you serve, the customers you want and your current enquiry routes. An optical shop, a clinic and an education website need different information.

Example: if you provide a particular service in Kozhikode, the relevant page should explain that service, who it is for, where it is available and how to contact you. Adding a town name repeatedly is not a substitute for useful business information.

What work can a freelance SEO specialist deliver?

Area of work A practical deliverable
Website audit A prioritised issue list for agreed pages, with recommended actions.
Keyword and page planning A mapping of relevant searches to existing or proposed pages.
On-page improvements Agreed changes to titles, headings, service information and internal links.
Technical SEO Checks and scoped fixes for indexing, redirects, canonical URLs and website access.
Content guidance Briefs or agreed page copy answering customer questions.
Reporting A record of completed work, search performance and remaining priorities.

The deliverables depend on the agreed scope. Copywriting, development, a website rebuild and ongoing management should be named explicitly rather than assumed to be included.

An audit and implementation are separate decisions

A paid audit identifies issues and suggests priorities. It does not automatically mean every recommendation has been implemented. The audit should explain the pages reviewed, evidence available, recommended work and any limitations.

Implementation means making the agreed changes. For WordPress projects, that might include improving selected service pages and their links, or correcting an agreed technical issue. Work requiring a developer should be identified clearly.

Ask before hiring: how many pages are included, who writes and approves the content, who implements technical recommendations, and what completion record will you receive?

What should monthly SEO support include?

Monthly support should have an agreed plan and a useful report. My service can include selected page improvements, content planning, ongoing checks and Search Console reporting when access is available.

A report should distinguish completed work from planned work. It should also note anything waiting for your approval, information or developer. The number of articles or updates should follow the scope and business need, not an arbitrary promise.

Website SEO and Google Maps support serve different needs

Website SEO focuses on your pages and organic search visibility. Local SEO can also include Google Business Profile information and the customer journey from Search or Maps. A business may need one or both.

My Local SEO portfolio identifies my role on each business profile and labels the reporting periods. Profile-wide direction requests and call actions are not website ranking results or confirmed customers. If Maps is your main concern, see my free public-profile review with three priority improvements.

How should progress be measured?

Search Console impressions and clicks describe search activity. They do not establish that an enquiry happened. Review them alongside relevant search queries, page changes and genuine enquiries you can confirm.

Successful form submissions, phone clicks and WhatsApp handoffs also need separate labels. A phone click does not prove that a call connected; a WhatsApp click does not prove that a conversation started. Test submissions should be excluded from genuine enquiry reporting.

Keep a simple record of the enquiry date, service requested, source when known and outcome. Compare equivalent periods and label incomplete months separately. A change in results alone does not establish that SEO caused it.

Compare an audit, implementation and monthly support

Option What to agree What you should receive
One-off audit Pages, access, checks and delivery date. A prioritised findings document with evidence, recommended actions and limitations.
Implementation project Specific fixes, content approvals and responsibility for development. A record of changes, affected URLs and checks confirming the agreed work.
Monthly support Priorities, available time, reporting period and review schedule. Completed work, comparable performance data, blockers and the next agreed priorities.

Ask for the scope in writing. An audit can lead to a separate implementation quote; monthly support should explain how priorities will be selected rather than imply that every website issue is covered.

Examples of the work I document

On GrowWithShaheer, I have reviewed service-page information and enquiry routes, and checked successful form submissions separately from phone and WhatsApp clicks. These are examples of implementation and measurement work, not proof of increased traffic or sales.

For local businesses, my Tarbouche profile audit shows how I label complete and partial reporting periods and distinguish profile actions from confirmed customers. My role on that project is occasional contribution through Fragmentree; the profile-wide results should not be attributed solely to my work.

If your immediate problem is that people find your website but do not contact you, use the website enquiry troubleshooting guide. This article focuses on choosing support and agreeing deliverables.

What a useful SEO report should show

  • Work completed: affected pages, the change made and the reason.
  • Search activity: the exact date range, relevant pages and queries, with clicks and impressions clearly labelled.
  • Enquiry evidence: successful submissions and click actions recorded separately, with genuine enquiries reviewed by the business.
  • Limitations: missing access, small samples, incomplete months and other changes that may affect results.
  • Next steps: a short prioritised list, including who needs to act.

A report with more impressions does not establish more customers. Ask how the proposed work relates to your services and how the business will confirm enquiry quality.

What does the business owner need to provide?

  • Accurate services, locations, hours and contact details.
  • Genuine business photos and useful information about customer questions.
  • A person who can approve content and changes.
  • Authorised access appropriate to the agreed work.
  • A way to review the quality and outcome of enquiries.

Use account invitations and suitable permissions where available. Do not send passwords or verification codes through an enquiry form.

Questions to ask before agreeing to SEO work

  • Which pages and tasks are included, and what is excluded?
  • Is this an audit, implementation project or monthly service?
  • What are the fees, timing and owner responsibilities?
  • How will recommendations and completed changes be documented?
  • Which metrics will be reported, and how will enquiries be distinguished from clicks?

Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO recommends examining previous work and asking how changes and results will be explained. It also states that no one can guarantee a number-one ranking. Guidance checked on 12 October 2026.

How much does freelance SEO cost?

A useful quote depends on the website’s condition, page count, required implementation, content needs and support period. I confirm scope, fees and timing in writing before work begins. A free initial conversation does not include a full technical audit or implementation.
