Yes. Adding or claiming an eligible business on Google is free in Kerala. You can manage the profile yourself; you do not need to pay Google or hire an agency to create it. This guide walks through the basic steps and the cases where you should claim an existing listing instead of making another one.
Quick checklist for a free business listing on Google in Kerala
- Search Maps for your business name and town before creating a listing.
- Prepare your real business name, category, phone number, hours and accurate address or service area.
- Add or claim the eligible business through Google, then complete the verification offered in your account.
Already listed but unsure what to improve? Request a free initial Google Business Profile review. I identify three priority improvements; implementation and ongoing management are paid services with scope and fees agreed first.
Before you start: is your business eligible?
A Google Business Profile is intended for a business with in-person contact with customers, either at a location customers can visit or by travelling to customers. A business that operates only online may not qualify. Check Google’s eligibility and ownership guidance before you begin. Only the owner or someone authorised by the owner should claim a listing.
Step 1: Check whether your business is already on Google Maps
Search Google Maps for your business name and town, for example, your shop name plus Malappuram or Kozhikode. If a listing already exists, do not create a duplicate. Open the listing and check whether you can claim it. For an unverified listing, Google describes a Claim this business and Manage now flow. If another person has already verified it, request ownership through Google’s process rather than creating a second listing.
Step 2: Add a new business only if no listing exists
Go to business.google.com/add, select Add your business to Google, and follow the instructions. Use the real business name you use with customers. Choose the category that best describes what the business actually does; avoid adding keywords or place names to the name just to try to rank.
Step 3: Enter your location or service area accurately
If customers can visit your staffed business location, provide its accurate address and map pin. If you visit customers and do not receive them at your address, follow Google’s service-area instructions and hide your address when appropriate. Add the places you really serve, plus a working phone number, current opening hours and a website if you have one. Do not list an address just to appear in another town. Google’s profile editing guidance explains address and service-area settings.
Step 4: Complete the verification Google offers
Select an available verification method and follow the on-screen instructions. The methods shown can vary by business; you cannot assume a particular option will appear. Once verified, review how the business information appears on Search and Maps. Google’s add or claim instructions cover both new and existing listings.
Step 5: Make the profile useful to customers
- Check your business category, phone number, hours and services for accuracy.
- Add genuine photos of your location, team, products or work where relevant.
- Keep holiday hours and contact details current.
- Invite real customers to leave honest reviews and respond professionally. Do not buy or fabricate reviews.
A complete, accurate profile helps people understand your business. Google says local results depend primarily on relevance, distance and prominence; no one can promise a particular Maps ranking. See Google’s local ranking guidance.
Is creating a Google Business Profile really free?
Yes. Google states that eligible businesses can add or claim a profile at no charge. A consultant may charge for optional setup, troubleshooting or ongoing management, but that is a separate professional service, not a fee to Google for the profile itself.
Where should I submit my business online in Kerala?
For a Google Search and Maps listing, use Google Business Profile rather than treating a general business-directory submission as the same service. Check for an existing Maps listing first, then add or claim the correct profile. A listing on another website is separate from your Google Business Profile.
Can I do it myself, or should I get help?
You can do it yourself using the steps above. If you are unsure whether a listing already exists, who owns it, which category fits, or how to represent a service-area business, I can help review the situation. I offer Google Business Profile setup and optimisation in Kerala, including Malappuram and Kozhikode. You can also contact me with your business name and location for a review.
